چکیده

(Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.): tissue culture, genetic transformation and use as an alternative model plant). Eggplant is an agronomically important non-tuberous solanaceous crop grown primarily for its large oval fruit. In popular medicine, eggplant is indicated for the treatment of several diseases, including diabetes, arthritis, asthma and bronchitis. Eggplant is susceptible to a number of diseases and pests capable of causing serious crop losses. This problem has been addressed by hybridizing eggplant with wild resistant Solanum species, which present a wide genetic diversity and are source of useful agronomic traits. The application of in vitro methodologies to eggplant has resulted in considerable success. Eggplant tissues present a high morphogenetic potential that is useful for developmental studies as well as for establishing biotechnological approaches to produce improved varieties, such as embryo rescue, in vitro selection, somatic hybridization and genetic transformation. Taken together, these characteristics also make eggplant a complete model for studies on different areas of plant science, including control of gene expression and assessment of genetic stability of somaclones derived from different morphogenetic processes. In the present study, important factors that affect the efficiency of in vitro regeneration through organogenesis and embryogenesis as well as genetic transformation are analyzed. The potential of this species as a model plant for studying various aspects of plant genetics and physiology is also discussed.

PLANT REGENERATION IN EGGPLANT (Solanum melongena L.) A REVIEW

Eggplant is highly responsive to various tissue culture techniques. Somatic embryogenesis and direct organogenesis are widely studied protocols in this crop, but potential of regeneration varies with genotype, explant and culture media supplemented with different combination and concentration of growth hormones. The genotype is the most important factor affecting somatic embryogenesis and organ...

Study of Variation of Yield and Morphological Traits of Some Local Varieties of Iran’s Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

Eggplant is a crop that has been cultivated for a long time in different areas of Iran. Nevertheless, no sufficient studies have been done on variation of morphological traits and yield of this crop in Iran, and it has not been well-attended in breeding programs. Therefore, to study genetic diversity in collected local varieties, the experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Desig...

Simple sequence repeat-based association analysis of fruit traits in eggplant (Solanum melongena).

Association mapping based on linkage disequilibrium (LD) provides a promising tool to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in plant resources. A total of 141 eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) accessions were selected to detect simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated with nine fruit traits. Population structure analysis was performed with 105 SSR markers, which revealed that two subgrou...

In vitro somatic embryogenesis and adventitious root initiation have a common origin in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)1

(In vitro somatic embryogenesis and adventitious root initiation have a common origin in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)). Somatic embryogenesis was induced from cotyledon explants of eggplant cultured on MS medium supplemented with 54 μM NAA. Anatomical analysis of somatic embryo initiation and development was performed during the first four weeks. Proembryo formation was observed after the se...
